Lesson Title: Economic Conditions North & South Related Lessons: Pre-Civil War
Grade Level: 11th grade
Unit: Civil War
Content Standards: SSUSH7 Students will explain the process of economic growth, its regional and national impact in the first half of the 19th century, and the different responses to it.
SSUSH8 The student will explain the relationship between growing north-south divisions and westward expansion.
Instructional Objectives: the teacher will spend approximately 10 minutes brainstorming with the students on what they know about the economic conditions of the North and South during this time. Next the students will write down what they hope to learn at the conclusion of this activity. The students will work in assigned groups to complete the Venn Diagram, identifying Economic issues and conditions which impacted thinking, and the way people lived in the North versus the South which may have contributed to the need to preserve slavery.
ACTION
Before-Class Preparation: Teacher will prepare Venn diagram and K-W-L graphic organizer for gathering information, provide students with websites to begin their search, gather pictures for visual, decide learning groups, and prepare checklist for evaluation of performance.
Instructional Activities: Each group will gather information regarding the economic conditions in the North and South to decide how they will use the information they gather over the next 2 days to create a storyboard to answer the question of Did the economic climate of each region contribute to the Civil War?
Materials and Resources: Working in groups of three, students will access computer websites, resource books, and pictures to list the economic similarities and differences between the North and South. Handout of Venn diagram and K-W-L chart to organize information. Students will be provided examples of storyboards to use in determining what information and design they will use to present their discussion and findings.
MONITOR
Ongoing Assessment(s):The teacher will use a checklist to record students while observing on/off task work. Each member of the group will be given 15 minutes before the end of class to reflect on what they have discovered so far in their journal which will be collected at the end of the project.
Accommodations and Extensions:The students will be placed in mixed ability groups and students with handwriting difficulties will be permitted to use a word processor to record their reflection. In addition, a copy of the graphic organizer will be placed in a e-folder to serve as an accommodation for students with handwriting problems.
Back-up Plan: The teacher will use the SmartBoard and lead a group brainstorming and question and answer session to access prior knowledge before providing students with a copy of the economic differences between the North and South in preparing their storyboard.
EVALUATION Lesson Reflection and Notes: Students will spend 15 minutes reflecting on what caused the way of life to be different then that in the South? Could jealousy in the way of life for both regions contribute to the onset of the Civil War?
